Yoakam was born on October 23, 1956 in Pikeville, Kentucky, but was raised in Columbus, Ohio. Despite common perception, Yoakam wasn't a musician who happened to become an actor later in life. He excelled at both music and drama in high school, and starred in several plays. Yoakam did ultimately decide to devote himself to music, and got his start by playing in clubs in Los Angeles before releasing his debut in 1984.
